GST, are we ready?

Kota Kinabalu, 21 Dec 2009: Prices of goods and services all over Sabah would increase with the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) Secretary General Datuk Richard Yong said prices of goods and services statewide, in particular, at rural areas are already higher and it could increase further the implementation of the GST.

The intended GST replacing the sales and services tax applies to everyone, the wealthy and the poor. Once imposed would definitely caused inflation and hike in prices of goods and services much similar to the effect of hike in petrol price.

The sales and services tax only applies to the rich at urban areas while the poor at rural areas are exempted.

"The GST (goods and services tax) is going to affect the livelihood of 85 percent of the population who today do not earn enough to pay income tax," said said PSM secretary-general S Arutchelvan.

  2. federal government trying to impose GST on every single soul of Malaysia. Now that they realised there were actually great majority of country men are poor and would surely turn aganst this government's attempt to squeeze more money for them to spend, they started to slow down their plan to implement GST. People's power will prevail and save ourselves from being exploited further.

  3. The issue has also been raised that Petronas "could go bust in 2018", forcing us to ask: Where have all the huge amounts of Petronas money gone to?

for example into Sauber race team and now, if the info is correct into M. Schumachers 63 Million Euro salary paid from Petronas as sponsor, into Lotus team and into a number of offshore companies were the profit never sees Malaysia again! Into some pockets and so on!

Kota Kinabalu: The Kota Kinabalu City Hall (KKCH) reached another milestone on Monday, when it added Vladivostok in the Russian Federation, as it fourth Sister City.

Mayor Datuk Iliyas Ibrahim and his Vladivostok counterpart, Igor Pushkaryov, officially established the Sister City relationship during a signing ceremony in the Russian city yesterday.

A statement issued by the KKCH here Tuesday said, witnessing the historical event were, Sabah Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Masidi Manjun, the Ministry's Permanent Secretary, Datuk Suzannah Liaw and Sabah Tourism Board General Manager, Datuk Irene Benggon Charuruks.

Also present were Vladivostok City Vice Mayor, Alexey Litvinov, KKCH Deputy Director-General, Joannes Solidau and other offcials, Shangri-La Tanjung Aru General Manager, Andrew Steele, senior officers from the Sabah Tourism Board and tourism agents from the state.

Following the ceremony, Kota Kinabalu and Vladivostok agreed to promote economical, cultural, scientific and other exchanges.

Both will also provide information to their citizens about the history, culture and life in their respective cities while promoting the exchange of officials, cultural, sport, youth and other delegations.

They will also inform each other about the structure and activities undertaken by their respective local governments, as well as promote various events aimed at strengthening the Sister City ties.

In his address, Iliyas said he was very impressed with the beautiful port city of Vladivostok and thanked Pushkaryov for accepting Kota Kinabalu as a Sister City.

Kota Kinabalu is Vladivostok's 18th Sister City.

According to Iliyas, Kota Kinabalu achieved city status in 2000 while Vladivostok's history can be traced to as far back as the 1850s.

This he stated, is an advantage for KKCH to learn from Vladivostok, especially in terms of city management.

Pushkaryov meanwhile said, he was very happy to establish the relationship with Kota Kinabalu.

He also expressed confidence that bilateral ties between both cities would be improved with business and cultural exchanges benefitting Vladivostok.

Masidi, who chaired a press conference, said there was a great tourism and business potential to be tapped between Kota Kinabalu and Vladivostok.

The Minister said his Ministry would be organising a familiarisation trip to Sabah for the media and tourism agents from Russia.

He added that where tourism is concerned, it is not only about Russians coming to Sabah but also Sabahans visiting Vladivostok.

Vladivostok is Russia's largest port city on the Pacific Ocean.

It is situated at the head of the Golden Horn Bay, not far from Russia's border with China and North Korea. It is also the home port of the Russian Pacific Fleet.

It has a population of about 600,000 with ethnic Russians and Ukrainians making up the majority.

The city's main industries are shipping and commercial fishing.

Its main exports are fish, timber products, metal and ships, while its main imports are food products, medicine, clothing, footwear, automobiles and household items.

The Trans-Siberian Railway was built to connect European Russia with Vladivostok.

Vladivostok is also home to numerous educational institutions, with six universities and the Vladivostok State Medical University, being one of the ten popular medical universities in Russia.

Apart from the Sister City signing ceremony, the delegation from Sabah who are on a seven-day working visit to Vladivostok and South Korea, also visited places of interests in the city and the internationally known Vladivostok Ocean Youth Camp.

A discussion on tourism exchanges was also held with the Sabah Tourism Board presenting a tourism documentary to tourism agents in Vladivostok, and vice-versa by the Vladivostok City Tourism Department.- Bernama

  9. It is reported that Petronas will go bankrupt in 2016 and what a lucky coincidence! Petronas finds the biggest oilfield in the world!!! Not Shell or another company: no Petronas!!! Why can I not believe this Petronas news???? How often did countries "sell their oil fields" to the banks to get loans and on the end the oilfield was so small it did not make much money because the exploration is a huge investment due LONG LONG LONG before the first single drop of oil sees the daylight!!!

‘Big oil field find by Petronas’

KUALA LUMPUR: Petronas has discovered a huge tract of oil reserves that could significantly reduce oil prices, claimed former Petronas chairman Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.

“I was told it is the biggest oil field this part of the world, and enough to depress oil prices,’’ he told a forum titled “Oil Royalty: A Constitutional Right?” yesterday.

The forum was organised by the Bar Council to discuss the constitutional aspects of the oil royalty payment.

Razaleigh said it was the prerogative of the Prime Minister to give Petronas the green light to start extracting oil from the newly-discovered field.

He hoped part of the earnings would be channelled to a national heritage trust fund for the future generation and that Petronas would manage the resources well.

“We hope there is no ‘leakage’, and the money goes back to the people,’’ he added.

Razaleigh also hoped misunderstandings over the law pertaining to oil royalty payment to Kelantan would be resolved soon, adding the Government should be advised properly.

Meanwhile, another panellist, Datuk Dr Shad Saleem Faruqi, said parts of the Petroleum Development Act were unconstitutional.

“For example, if oil is found inland, it is unconstitutional for the federal government to stake claim on it. But according to the Act, it gets 5%, which is unconstitutional,” he said.

  10. I am not from Penang but I praise Penang Pakatan Rakyat for taking care of senior citizen. No doubt RM100 is not big for those who can afford. But is valuable for those who are in need of monies especially the poor and middle class citizen.

From young we work and pay income tax. We grow old and get blessing from receiving.

Unlike some affordable peoples who have money and only want to oppose Pakatan Rayat for giving money to senior citizen. Do these group of affordable peoples really show love to those poor/middle class senior citizen who are in need of monies?

For so many years I never heard of anyone willing to offer senior citizen money. This is the first time and I believe in future if Pakatan Rakyat gets richer, I hope senior citizen can get RM100 monthly as I myself one day will get old.

GST will also affect the life of those poor/middle class senior citizen as prcies of goods may increase.
