WILL WE SEE ANOTHER FLIP FLOP HERE IN MABUL?

Do you remember the decision by the State Government to scrap the building of a coal fired plant in Lahad Datu on the basis of environment on 4 May 2008. Then in a news on 21 November 2008, Datuk Zakaria Idris (BN - Gum Gum) said that blackouts due to insufficient power supply were common and threatened economic development in the east coast. Sabah has no choice but to accept a 300mW coal-fired plant in Sandakan to ensure sufficient power supply in the state’s east coast, an assemblyman told the State Assembly. Have you ever wonder if what is not right for Lahad Datu can be right for Sandakan? So much for the flip-flop disease of our nation leadership. Is it as contagious? Before that is sorted out, we now have a new environmental issues on Mabul island. A proposed 33 hectare oceanarium resort will be build in Mabul Island, located in the East Coast of Sabah.
State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun had said that it will not destroy the coral reefs. Rather, it would help ease pressure from the diving crowd coming from neighbouring Sipadan island.

The question now is should we have development at the expense of environment? How much can Sabah benefit from the tourist who would "flock" to the oceanarium? Is it jus another "project" for the rakyat? I leave it for your the rakyat to call the shots, remember the next general elections, even a vote make the difference...........its in your hand now.

  2. Sabahan tell your YBs not to think of their own pockets anymore. It's time for those in power and the rakyat to think hard on how to improve the conditions of the state in whatever way we can contribute.

Pleaselah, it's so shameful that Sabah's ranking has dropped from second richest to poorest state, which is worst than Kelantan which has been under opposition government for more than 10 years and yet they are better off than Sabah despite the usual trick by the federal to cut off funds for development for a long time.

Sabah YBs please do not think of your gula gula anymore but think of the big cake for the whole Sabah. Do not simply approve project just for your gula gula because this gula gula will shrink in value if Sabah doesn't progress.

Of courselah...what do you expect?? The Oceanarium can't be exist or stand there by himself..must have somebody to built it,and have to pay worker salary, insurance and so on. You mahukah bina tempat itu for free...maybe you can if you have been Director of yayasan sabah or chief minister for 2 years.

No matter how you want to deny it, the statistics show that Sabah is the poorest state in Malaysia. Doesn't that mean Kelantan people are better off than Sabahan ? Or you don't understand the implications of the statistics ?

Despite the prospect of Malaysia's economic growth slowing to just 1.5 percent in 2009, according to leading local investment bank RHB, from an expected 5.4 percent this year, Penang has seen a rise in foreign investment.

    By Julie Goh, Reuters

PENANG - Malaysia's manufacturing state of Penang believes it can introduce controversial economic reforms and win investment despite a global economic slowdown and the challenge of being an opposition-run state.

"Yes, the economic slowdown has affected Penang. I'm not going to run away from admitting it," Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng told Reuters in an interview last week.

"That's why, we are adopting an expansionary budget next year, one that is pro-growth, pro-jobs and pro-poor," he said.

Despite the prospect of Malaysia's economic growth slowing to just 1.5 percent in 2009, according to leading local investment bank RHB, from an expected 5.4 percent this year, Penang has seen a rise in foreign investment.

The state has received $1.69 billion worth of investment in the first seven months of 2008 against $1.30 billion for the whole of last year, Lim said.

U.S. firm National Instruments (NATI.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) said this month it would spend $80 million to set up a plant, while Honeywell (HON.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) said it would shift some operations to the island.

    -----------------------------

So, Sabahan of all races, discard your fear of change which has been implanted in our minds all these years by the BN government.

It will be easier for us to manage our own state than Penang with all the natural resouces we have like petroleum, gas, palm oil etc.

SAPP GO , GO, for it . Yes We Can !

    Save Mabul Island

I have the opportunity to visit Mabul Resort 2 years ago. I am very impressed with the facilities and the natural beauty of the island, with clear water and plenty of marine life. I remember there were a group of 10 visitors from Germany I met during the trip, said Malaysia’s islands especially Mabul Island, have become preferred destination for their family annual vacation. It is obvious visitors are attracted by its natural beauty and clean environment.

Now we are told that an oceanarium will be built near the Mabul Resort. If it is approved, in such big project, any construction around the island will definitely upset the fragile eco-system and environment of the resort. Tonnes of construction material and the influx of workers to do the construction will cause untold damage to the sea water and with it the marine life.

The Sipadan Island development and subsequent cabinet directive to stop all development should remind the Sabah Authority that any massive development around the Mabul Island will destruct the marine life.

I agreed that Sabah need for tourist spot to sustain its tourism industry but developing an oceanatium around Mabul is definitely not one of them. It does not add value to Mabul Island but to destroy what it gifted. I believe people want to observe not a man make beauty but what nature has endowed us.

I always have my doubt about Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), and the various mitigating measures undertaken. There is hardly any supervision and enforcement, at best the EIA, is just to satisfy the approving authority. One must not forget the carrying capacity in any eco-tourism projects. An influx of unlimited visitors is sure to kill the marine life.

Sabah has great tourism potential because of the sea and natural eco-tourism sites. More promotion and direct air times will boost tourist arrival. For example, The Danum Valley which is located about 70km west of Lahad Datu is hardly known to a lot of Malaysian. I visited it when I went to the Scientific Research Centre many years ago. It is a vast reserve of tropical lowland forest rich in tropical flora and fauna. It has been recognized as one if the world’s most complex eco-systems and I rate it one of the best eco-tourism site in Malaysia.

Current leaders only think of their current pockets, not the future generations. There is no proper plan of development from the government, just approve any projects from cronies .The future Sabahan will be left with and have to cope with all the destructions they do to the marine lives, land, and not to forget the pollution from the coal powered project they have proposed.

  22. I thought an Oceanarium is an aquarium with sea life being displayed inside, or as defined by the dictionary, a large aquarium for the study or display of marine life.
Having the natural ocean and sea life in abundance all around the Mabul and Sipadan Islands is a much more interesting and attractive prospect for would be tourists and locals to go enjoy and have a look. People love the natural, the beauty of it is it is not man made.

Here the state government proposed to have an Oceanarium of sorts built on the Island for ......what?
    (Taken from http://dksdreamworld.blogspot.com/2008/11/value-of-nature-we-never-appreciate.html)
Musa'ng can have anything as long as he can have the benefits, so anything goes, even an artificial ocean in the ocean. Make sense?
