SAPP to Umno's Anifah: Lead Independent Group

The Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) is calling on Umno Kimanis MP Datuk Anifah Aman to lead an independent group of MPs from Sabah and Sarawak.

MPs representing different parties from the two states can move the process of political change forward, SAPP president Datuk Yong Teck Lee said in a statement.

  4. Anifah Aman is not here nor there, he should start fighting for Sabah's supreme council. I'm a Sabahan in the peninsular after I couldn't find a living income in Sabah, I migrated and work in a pathetic place, but I soldier on. I have no choice but to feed my family. I can't even get married bcoz I don't have the money to sustain the family. Aman should be aware that Sabahan youth are suffering and have no future unlike the rest. We will curse him like all others cowards if he doesn't take a definate position on Sabah and its supreme interests. We will pee on Sabah leaders graves if we are left hopeless as we are now. Luck knocks your door once and not twice, you will regret if you lose this one and Sabahans may go down the drain if their leaders don't grab this opportunity. History will be our witness. Pliz give us a future as a Sabah youth. Failure, poor education, lack of employment opportunities, drugs, pre-marital sex, illegal children, lack of opportunities, hopelessness, despair and many other ills are what we have and face, don't you have the heart to cry for us? Let's wait and if you fail, we will break the shackles and get our revenge in the next elections.

  7. Anifah is not a true leader. He can talk loud because he is a millionaire (he once boasted that he became a millionaire when he was only 26...who cant be if the brother is Ayub Aman who controlled Keningau timbers during Berjaya era).

    Mr Yong, rest assured you have Sabahans support. We dont need Anifah or for that matter anybody from UMNO.

  10. As a Chinese I would of course prefer a Chinese to lead the exodus from BN. But Sabah is a multi-racial place with many different races. And it requires that all the races cooperate and unite to make a concerted action to get out of the BN. Whether Anifah "leads" or Datuk Yong "leads" is immaterial. In fact, all must cooperate as equals as each MP represents his own constituency and has the equal right as every other MP. Or nobody can be coerced by any other MP but all must cooperate equally according to the wishes of his own constituency.

    But it is clear that the vast majority of the Sabahans want to opt out of the BN which has failed Sabah for 45 years. It has managed to turn Sabah from the richest state in 1963 to the poorest state now even with vast oil wealth. Therefore, it is obviously the wishes of the Sabahans that their MP's take action to make Sabah richer and safer with equal rights and justice for all races.

    But I would urge the Sabah and Sarawak MP's to get on the ball and move. As the Chinese saying goes, ҹL - night is long and dreams many. The sooner the Sabah and Sarawak MP's take themselves out of BN and join PR the better.

    As to Datuk Yong, I'd just like to say no matter who leads, the Chinese Sabahans are with you and hope you will always watch out for the rights of the Chinese Sabahans.

  13. We Chinese don't need to know what Anwar is or was !

    The question whether we can trust Anwar Ibrahim to keep his promise when he becomes prime minister to slash petrol price is not really an issue because it is not possible for anyone to know for sure whether a person will keep his word.

    What is more important is to ensure that we have a system that will make him accountable if he does not keep his promise. We have lived with a Barisan Nasional government for 50 years and they have never ever cared for the people’s welfare and interests, and yet we have voted for the Umno-led government for 50 years.

    Why then is it necessary for us to worry if Anwar will keep his word? He has so far performed according to his word. He has openly supported a multi-racial Malaysia and this has never passed the lips of any Umno leader for all of the 50 years they have been in government.

    From my perspective, it is sufficient that Anwar says he will deliver and that is good enough for all of us because if politics is from now structured according to my vision of a two-party parliamentary system, it will naturally evolve (if MCA gets out of Barisan Nasional).

    In any such event, from now on, any government that does not deliver will be voted out of office. This is what democracy is all about and we should strive for this ideal.

    I endorse Anwar on strategic and grounds of common sense; and so I will state what it is that is so strategic and common sense that I talk about. I had all along been touting that the minority races must regain our voter strength and to stand on our own as full citizens of the Malaysian nation, under the protection of the Malaysian constitution.

    The truth is that in all the past 50 years Umno - acting with the complicity of the MCA and MIC - had in all ways and mostly for the elite, hijacked the Malaysian nation.

    The NEP was in every way a mere ‘red herring’ to enrich the few Malays and so-called Umno leaders, but to the average Ahmad, Harun and Sofi, the NEP was only in name. To those Malays in the kampung who are not politically connected, ask them if they even know how to access government largess?

    Let me be blunt about what had gone on in the distribution of government largess and what has been the result. Billions over the last 50 years has been given to the bumiputeras but what has been gained? Have the Malays developed a viable capitalist entrepreneurial class?

    I can tell you that in this respect, Malaysia has remained is at a standstill because the recipients of government largess were not the cream of Malay youth. They only chose those who are the ‘connected’ sons and daughters, a very small elite group.

    Is there a pool of capable technocrats to carry the Malays to a higher level of development? Assess the pool of Malay talent that you have today. I can say that most - if not all - of the Malay graduates find employment refuge in government service.

    I say that after the March 8 elections, the political landscape of Malaysia has changed for good and for ever. The Malay component of Malaysian society is 68 % so you tell me, and the Chinese and Indians make up the other 32% but after March 8, the majority of the Chinese have abandoned the MCA and this desertion of the Chinese from MCA will continue until MCA withers on the vine. In the case of MIC, who knows?

    However, the 68% Malay voter base is divided between Umno, PKR and PAS. Even if we assume that each sides takes half and half, the present trend is for Malay grassroots to support PKR and PAS. This will mean that Chinese support is the determinant that will swing the balance of power towards Pakatan Rakyat.

    We, the Chinese, do not need to know how good or how bad Anwar is or was; we do not need to know. All that the Chinese need to know is how to support Anwar 100% and swing the federal government to his coalition because for the pendulum to swing, we need to nudge the pendulum a little bit so that it will begin to swing on its own momentum.

    No matter what Anwar is or was, we need to swing the pendulum to start the movement and for the Chinese to become the ‘swing voters’.

    It is for this reason alone if not for anything else, that there is strong reason for the Sarawak and Sabah politicians to join Anwar to win government. It is better to be in government than to be outside of government.

    Anwar has Chinese - and for now Indian - support to form government. In other words, he is sure to be able to form government.

  14. Record of a spendthrift gov't !!!

    Looking at the list below, it looks like the BN government is more determined to help themselves rather than the citizens. And this list below is hardly exhaustive as these are the ones uncovered so far – the tip of the ice-berg, if you will. What lies beneath could be much larger :

    The Bank Bumiputra twin scandals in the early 1980s saw US$1 billion (RM3.2 billion in 2008 ringgit) wasted;

    The Maminco attempt to corner the world tin market in the 1980s is believed to have cost some US$500 million (RM1.6 billion);

    Betting in foreign exchange futures cost Bank Negara Malaysia RM30 billion in the 1990s;

    Perwaja Steel resulted in losses of US$800 million (RM2.56 billion). (Eric Chia was charged with corruption for allegedly steering US$20 million (RM64 million) to a Hong Kong-based company.);

    Use of RM10 billion public funds in the Valuecap Sdn. Bhd. operation to shore up the stock market;

    Banking scandal of RM700 million losses in Bank Islam;

    The sale of MV Agusta by Proton for one euro making a loss of US$75.99 million (RM348 million);

    Wang ehsan from oil royalty in Terengganu amounting to RM7.4 billion from 2004 – 2007;

    For the past 10 years since the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra was established, this orchestra has swallowed a total of RM500 million;

    The government has spent a total of RM3.2 billion in teaching maths and science in English over the past five years. Out of the amount, the government paid a whopping RM2.21 billion for the purchase of information and computer technology (ICT) equipment of which the breakdown of costs is unknown;

    The commission paid for the purchase of jets and submarines to two private companies, Perimeker Sdn Bhd and IMT Defence Sdn Bhd amounted to RM910 million;

    RM300 million to compensate Gerbang Perdana for the RM1.1 billion ‘crooked, scenic half-bridge’;

    RM1.3 billion has been wasted building the white elephant Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) facilities on cancellation of the Malaysia-Singapore scenic bridge;

    RM100 million spent on the parliament building for renovations and to patch up leaks;

    National Astronaut Programme (Angkasawan) - RM40 million;

    National Service Training Programme - yearly an estimate of RM500 million;

    ‘Eye on Malaysia’ giant ferris wheel - RM30 million and another RM5.7 million of free tickets;

    RM4.63 billion 'soft-loan' to Port Klang Free Trade Zone (PKFTZ);

    RM2.4 million for purchase of indelible ink for FE2008 which was not used;
    Bailouts –

    Two bailouts of Malaysia Airline System at RM7.9 billion;

    Putra LRT transport system bailout which cost RM4.486 billion;

    Star LRT bailout costing RM3.256 billion;

    National sewerage system (Indah Water) bailout costing RM192.54 million;

    Seremban – Port Dickson highway bailout costing RM142 million;

    Kuching prison buidling project bailout costing RM135 million;

    ‘Kajian Makanan dan Gunaan Orang Islam’ project bailout costing RM8.3 million;

    ‘Le Tour de Langkawi’ cycling race bailout costing RM3.5 million;
    And let’s not forget the APs scandal that has been going on year-after-year going back for more than three decades involving a mind-boggling sum of tens of billions of ringgit.

    And since 1997, Petronas has handed out a staggering RM30 billion in natural gas subsidies to IPPs who are making huge profits. In addition, there was much wastage and forward trading of Petronas oil in the 1990s based on the low-price of oil then.

    Since the accounts of Petronas are for the eyes of the prime minister only, we have absolutely no idea what the amount is.

    In a Time Asia’s issue on March 15, 2004, a South East Asian economist at Morgan Stanley in Singapore, Daniel Lian, figures ‘that the country may have lost as much as U$$100 billion (RM320 billion) since the early 1980s to corruption...’

    Mind you, this is only corruption and it does not include wastage and mismanagement which would increase the amount. If the above list (which could have been money saved) is added to the nation's coffers and together with Petronas' profits; palm oil profits and profits from agriculture produce, aqua-culture produce, electronic and hardware exports etc, for the past five decades, we can all agree on one thing – our country would be wealthier than Venezuela who has little resources except for oil.

    The petrol in Venezuela is RM0.16 per litre!

  17. Musical chair in Sabah politics.

    It is expected that Sabah BN may gradually split into two, with one stays together with the federal government and another will leave BN and form an independent coalition, being the third force after BN and Pakatan Rakyat.

    "There was no motion for a vote of no-confidence against the Prime Minister Monday (23 June). The tension of BN has been slightly released while the hopes of Pakatan Rakyat are gradually fading. Both of the parties wonder whether Datuk Yong Teck Lee is really serious about it.
    In the past few days, I have asked some Pakatan Rakyat MPs and all of them did not understand why Yong was doing it.
    Has Yong rubbed on the magic lamp? Was there a genie inside? If so, was the genie being released?
    A MP told me that the original plan was like horse racing in which more than a hundred of horses burst out when the gate opens after the race gun goes off
    However, no shot could be heard and the gate remained closed. But a horse escaped from the gate and ran on the track. It made no difference with only the strength of one. The no-confidence motion might not be mentioned again within a short period of time.
    Yong and SAPP have also exposed themselves in which they can no longer hide under the protection of Sabah BN to bargain with the federal government.
    "Based on their political sense, they know that leaving BN will be more conducive to gain Sabahans' support."
    It seems like Yong and Pakatan Rakyat have failed to achieve their objectives while Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and BN are safe for the moment. At the same time, we could see that this is not yet the time for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Pakatan Rakyat. They still do not have enough of seats to overthrow Pak Lah's government.
    However, Yong's calculation might not be such simple. He has long-term political agenda. And perhaps, this is just the beginning. First of all, Yong has suddenly become popular in Sabah. The first horse that burst out from the gate has grabbed the people's attention. Sabahans who are discontented with the federal government could find satisfaction from Yong.

    SAPP used to be a tiny political party and it will remain a tiny political party if it stays in the BN coalition. Moreover, based on the current political situation in Sabah, staying in BN might lead to the lose of its existing seats in the Parliament. So, Yong took its first step to secure its future.
    Currently, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has carved up Chinese seats of SAPP while SAPP are not allowed to take seats belonging to Kadazan and Muslim member parties of BN. Yong has no way to expand its power.
    Confronting BN does not only enhance its popularity, but as well earns a greater space for SAPP. SAPP can interfere in LDP's constituencies and it can also expand to non-Chinese constituencies in the future.
    Secondly, Sabah BN has shown the federal government its strength through Yong. Yong did not really fight alone. Instead, he was supported by leaders from other parties.
    Ghapur Salleh, Anifah Aman from Sabah Umno, and Bernard Dompok from United PasokMomogun Kadazandusun Organisation (Upko) are powerful leaders in Sabah. This time, they were “sympathetic” over Yong, forcing BN to cautiously handle the problem.
    No matter whether they have reached an agreement with Yong, at least they have opened a space for their future cooperation. Anti-federal-government Sabah leaders did not want to see Yong being sacrificed because if so, they might meet the same fate as Yong.
    It is expected that Sabah BN may gradually split into two, with one stays together with the federal government and another will leave BN and form an independent coalition, being the third force after BN and Pakatan Rakyat. Based on their political sense, they know that leaving BN will be more conducive to gain Sabahans' support.
    It is learnt that about 14 to 18 Sabah BN MPs are now tend to form the new coalition. As Yong has taken the first step, naturally, he has become one of the leaders.
    Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had spent 10 years to divide Sabah politics into several large pieces. For Muslim, he terminated United Sabah National Organisation (Usno) and introduced Umno. For Kadazan, he weakened Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and hastened the formation of Upko and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah(PBRS) to split Kadazan's political power. For Chinese, he let SAPP and LDP to contradict and check and balance each other.
    Today, Dr Mahathir's “grand plan” is gradually collapsing. Sabah political power is reforming and its structure is changing. It seems that it is the will of Sabahans."

    The Chinese had hoped to be part of a new nation that will respect their rights. (As opposed to being a colonial subject with unequal rights under the British colony.) That expectation had been betrayed by the Malay dogma of ketuanan Melayu. At the beginning the Chinese were tricked into believing that Malaysia will be for Malaysians with Chinese being recognized as a full Malaysian. But soon, the Chinese were betrayed by being designated as third class citizens and have no rights to equality and justice.

    And those who suggest that Chinese had willingly walked into this current iniquitous hell are scumbags. The Chinese have been betrayed and violated by the thuggish Malays who have violated every tenets of the UM human rights.

    Therefore, it is the right of the Chinese to demand equality and justice. If the Malays will not implement equality and justice, then it is the right of the Chinese to fight for it with the moral support of all civilized world.

  28. It is obvious that SAPP alone could not make any difference. In order to have any effect in the national policy, the majority of the parties in Sabah and Sarawk must act in concert and leave BN.

    Datuk Yong was very courageous in taking the lead in annoucing his plan to table the motion of no confidence. But, unfortunately, his lead was not supported by other parties in Sabah and Sarawak. Actually, he was stabbed in the back by other Sabah and Sarawak parties who had even proposed to penalize him for his bold move.

    Going forward, the people of Sabah and Sarawak must take the initiative and put pressure on their respective MP's to compel them to leave the BN. Otherwise, this will just blow over and UMNO-BN will continue to perpetrate their foul policies to racially cleanse the Chinese from Sabah and give citizenship to millions of illegal immigrants while robbing the Sabahans and Sarawakians of their rightful share of the oil money.

    The most powerful force in any democracy is the people. This is an unprecedented opportunity for the people of Sabah and Sarawak to exercise their democratic power of telling their MP's what to do. Never before was there ever a situation where UMNO-BN was actually put in a position where they could be forced out of the government. Now, the 53 non-PR MP's of Sabah and Sarawak can swing their support to PR and once and for all get rid of the UMNO-BN from the Malaysian government.

    Remember in a democracy the people are the master and the MP's are nothing more than their servants who must do the people's bidding in the parliament. So, please tell your respective MP's that they MUST get out of BN and condemn the heinous policies of UMNO-BN.

    Unity is power. Datuk Yong cannot act alone without the support of the Sabah and Sarawak people. So support Datuk Yong and ultimately yourself by telling your respective MP's to get out of BN and warn them that if they don't then you will not vote for them in the next election. And if a recall mechanism exists, then the people should start the recall process to get rid of the BN diehards and replace them with a more obedient MP who will dissociate themselves from BN.

  29. I sincerely hope SAPP will abide by the verdict of the polls set up. Currently the wish of the people is for SAPP to leave BN and join Pakatan Rakyat. Please do not disappoint the people again.

    Do the right thing by leaving BN.

    If the SAPP do not leave BN, then please don't set up polls to deceive the people next time and then dash their hopes.
