Petition on QEH shrugged off

I think the PM may think that KK without a proper general hospital is not that important. His pol-sec just refused to accept SAPP's petition by saying "come next time" but when???

Obviously, we know that the political secretary only carried out instructions from his boss.

Don't treat us like fools!

  1. Opposition parties in Sabah are selfish to the core.It is my personal opinion that the Hospital issue is a matter for all parties to gather together with one voice. The 4,000 odd signatures were nothing very much to shout about, compared to the 500,000 odd residents of Kota Kinabalu.

Had all the opposition parties in Sabah were solidified and work together,I'm convinced the signatures would have been 20 times more at least.

This is a very important and serious matter.I would suggest that politics aside,in future leaders from the opposition must joint forces in their struggle for the benefit of the people.

SAPP,PKR,DAP and PAS,please wake up.The time has come for you to put aside your rhetoric and get down to serious business. The people put you there, they can also remove you.

Motivasi sikit sama LDP sampai apa yang dibangkitkan pun setakat untuk siaran akhbar aje. Tah deh follow up. UPKO lagi, Dompok konon mau kembangkan pengaruh sehingga orang asli Semenanjung tapi masalah hospital kita pula mcm dia tak tau pula macam pembinaan loji disebuah kampung dalam kawasan Penanmpang.

  9. Sabah Umno 'backs coal plant project'
Published on: Wednesday, November 11, 2009 Email to a friend Printer Friendly

Kota Kinabalu: Umno Sepanggar said it fully supports the construction of the coal-fired power plant at Felda Sahabat, near Lahad Datu, because it can provide stable power supply to the people in the State.

Its chief, Jumat Haji Idris, said those objecting to the project might not realise that the unstable electricity supply was causing millions of ringgit in losses to traders, entrepreneurs and manufacturers.

"We think those who are objecting to the project don't really understand the needs of the people É they are blindly objecting to it without sufficient information," he said.

"We are confident that Sabah Umno members numbering more than 400,000 support the project. We call on the Government to expedite the project for the sake of the people," he said.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had stated that some sacrifices needed to be made in order to achieve development, and in this case to address the power woes in Sabah.

Jumat said those objecting do not understand the suffering of the people and have not offered a solution for the consideration of the Government.

According to him, the State and Federal governments are sensitive to the plight of the people who are in dire need of stable power supply.

Those opposed to it have forgotten that the Government has the Science and Innovation Ministry, which has experts in various fields.

"They are as though belittling the capability of the government officers, especially Tenaga Nasional Berhad and Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd," he said.

In this respect, Umno Sepanggar chided the attitude of those making objections under the cloak of environmentalism.

"We challenge them to provide academic proof of the so-called bad effects of using coal to generate power in countries like Canada, Europe and Australia," he said.

In Malaysia, he said coal-fired power plants had been used in Tanjung Johor and Sarawak for quite a long time.

Let opponents of coal plant continue to bark: Umno chief
Published on: Friday, November 13, 2009

Kota Kinabalu: Umno Sepanggar Chief, Jumat Idris said the division is not budging from its stand to support the Government's move to build the coal-fired power plant at Felda Sahabat near Lahad Datu.

He said the division's stand on the issue was firm and is calling for the government to expedite the construction of the plant in order to address the power woes in Sabah quickly.

"Let the opponents (to the project) continue to bark at the hill. What is important is that the Tenaga Nasional Berhad have to provide experts to monitor the power supply consistency there at all times," he said.

Idris said he had expected that his statement would be getting strong response from Sabah Environmental Protection Association (Sepa), an organisation that he used to be involved in together with Henry Chok, Datuk Christine VanHoutten and K. Ravi back in the 1980s.

Sepa had given him a long list of explanation and reference to several sites in the world, which had experienced the negative effect of such plant but Idris said the NGO need also to be rationale in continuing this confrontation with the government.

On using coal as the fuel to generate power, Idris called on anybody including Sepa and its President, Wong Tack to state the difference in the pollution index and harmful effect of using fossil fuel, gas and coal.

"The difference must be made known to the public, especially the villagers in Lahad Datu and vicinity of the proposed power plant. (I believe) the negative effect on the ecosystem can be overcome by using science and technology so as to reduce the impact to the environment," he said.

Idris said Wong Tack and Sepa should also be looking at the destruction caused by fish bombing activities as well as fuel spill, which is happening in front of their eyes.

It should be their responsibility to educate those involved in these negative activities, he said, adding that he had been to Tanjung Labian many times and its beach is beautiful but its waters is the bed for fish bombing activities, "electrical shock" fishing as well as the entry points for Filipino illegal immigrants.

"The destruction and pollution of the beaches in Likas, Tanjung Aru, Tuaran including the rivers due to plastic garbage among others what are the action taken by Sepa to create awareness among the public.

"Don't just talkÉit is like the Malay proverb, "ketam mengajar anaknya berjalan lurus" (a crab teaching its youngs to walk straight)," he said.

According to Jumat, TNB had already prepared the necessary expertise to face any possibility in the implementation of the project.

"We respect the views of all quarters and their concerned because we all care about our people's life and love our environment. "But as a responsible government to the people's need it should be a priority to provide them with sufficient power supply," he said, adding that the responsibility to preserve the environment including technology has now been placed under the Science and Innovation Ministry.

"We have many experts and scientists who are more knowledgeable than those who merely want to speak out but decline to shoulder responsibility apart from becoming the spokesman for those with their own agendas," he said.

He reiterated that he was puzzled as to why the NGO only knows to criticise but never provide views and experts proposal on the issue.

"There are those who support and offer alternative but it is only in the form of a statement and not solution," he said.

"Does Sepa has the people with expertise who are able to discuss in technical terms with the TNB and representatives from the Ministry.

Most importantly we see the coal-fired power plant can be the long-term solution to our power woes," he said.

Sabah can be business hub: Brunei
Published on: Sunday, November 15, 2009 Email to a friend Printer Friendly

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah has strong potential to become another international business capital, according to Brunei's Industry and Primary Resources Ministry's project officer, Pg Hamrondiny Pg Tajuddin.

He said Sabah's location in the middle of Asean, its environment, culture and natural beauties were the main factors to potentially become a successful international business centre.

Hamrondiny was speaking to Daily Express during the Borneo International Trade Fair (BITF) 2009, held at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex from Nov 13-16.

Looking at the potential of Sabah as an international hub, he said, his Ministry was hoping to take advantage of the situation and capitalise on Sabah to springboard its market to the rest of the world.

"We consider Sabah and Sarawak as domestic markets as we share the same culture and business practices. To penetrate 5 per cent of the Sabah market alone would be a huge achievement for our SMEs as the population in Sabah is much more than that of Brunei," he said.

Brunei is one of the International participants in the BITF 2009 along with China, Thailand and Indonesia.

Hundreds of visitors and businessmen flocked to the event which started on Friday, where booths of various goods and services from toys to government agencies have been set up.

The trade fair showcases the Government's ongoing efforts in the implementation of the Sabah Development Corridor (SDC) as a thrust to spur investments and developments in the agriculture, tourism, logistic services and manufacturing sectors.

SAPP: Coal plant idea not supported by public
Published on: Sunday, November 15, 2009 Email to a friend Printer Friendly

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) said the State Government proposal to construct a coal-fired power plant in the State is not supported by the people.

In fact, SAPP Tungku chief, Datu Suaib Mutalib said the State Cabinet led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman had rejected the proposal to build the plant in Silam, Lahad Datu, the site chosen by the Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) before.

The reason given by the Chief Minister for the rejection of the coal-fired power plant proposal on April 2, 2008 was that it would be detrimental to the health of the people and the environment.

The people in Sandakan also objected to using the same arguments when Sungai Seguntor was chosen as the alternative site, he said.

"However, the State Cabinet and Sabah Barisan Nasional leaders, especially those from Umno, never objected when Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced that the plant will be built in the Felda Sahabat area also in Lahad Datu," he said.

Suaib said some of the Umno leaders in Sabah gave their fullest support to Najib on the matter and that the people in the State must be prepared to sacrifice to enjoy development through the setting up of the coal-fired power plant.

"It is puzzling as none of the Umno leaders has rejected the project with an open mind," he said.

Suaib also described the move by Sepanggar Umno chief, Jumat Idris, was "merely an act of lobbying for the Sepanggar Parliamentary seat" in the coming election.

He said the people in Lahad Datu did not object blindly to the proposal as claimed by Jumat but because they understand the consequences of building the power plant fuelled by coal to generate electricity.

Furthermore, Suaib said the leaders should just wait for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Report to be finalised before pledging their support to Najib.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yes, let us wait for the EIA report. The Sabah BN had done their bit to oppose some of the FG policies in Sabah. But they can do better, they can do more.
We need leaders in BN not as yes-man but leaders who are able to think for the benefit of the state.
We need leaders who works and speaks for the people of sabah.

Sabah assembly: Coal-fired plant against green policy
    By RUBEN SARIO

    sario@thestar.com.my

KUCHING: A bid for an emergency motion to enable the House to debate a proposed 300mW coal-fired power plant at Tungku in the east coast Lahad Datu district was rejected by Speaker Datuk Juhar Mahiruddin.

The emergency motion was tabled by Melanie Chia Ket Sui (SAPP-Luyang) who said that the coal-fired plant was not in line with the Government’s emphasis on green energy.

“Developed nations are abandoning coal-fired plants. Why are we in Sabah taking something that has been abandoned,” she said.

Melanie said the idea of a coal-fired plant was unpopular and it had been relocated twice, from Silam in Lahad Datu initially and then from Seguntor in Sandakan before being fixed at Tungku.

“The people of Lahad Datu and Seguntor had rejected the coal-fired plant and now the majority of Sabahans do not want it as well,” she added.

At this juncture Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman stood up and asked Melanie to substantiate her claim that a majority of the people were rejecting the coal-fired plant.

“Please do not mislead the House,” he added.

Datuk Suhaili Said (BN-Tungku) then stood up and told the House that as far as he knew, his constituents had no issues about the coal-fired plant being located in their area.

RM10b aluminium smelter proposed in Sabah

A representative of the investors, Melvin Saw Khay Boon (left) hands over the project proposal to Musa as Jhuvarri (second from left) looks on.

    16th November, 2009

KOTA KINABALU: A foreign investor has proposed the setting up of an aluminium smelter complex in Sabah and is awaiting positive response from the State government, it was revealed here yesterday.

The project proposal documents, which have already been studied by relevant government agencies, were handed over to the Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman, when he toured the Sabah Development Corridor pavilion at the 2nd Borneo International Trade Fair at the Sports Complex here Saturday.

The project vendors hope to start the RM10.24 billion complex with an annual capacity of 620,000 tonnes per annum by June 2010 when all the necessary approvals are obtained.

The investors have been in discussion with Sabah Land Development Board for the last six months with regard to the project and are confident that the State can become the major aluminum player in the South East Asia region in particular.

SLDB Chief Executive Officer, Jhuvarri Majid, said the proposed aluminium smelter would be a huge shot-in-the-arm for the fledgling Sabah Development Corridor which was launched two years ago.

“We have a foreign investor who would be investing billions of ringgit in a single project that would bring numerous benefits to the State and country,” he said.

  33. Hi to everybody who is complaining about the present government.

I have some questions for you:
    1. are you a registered voter?
    2. did you vote for the opposition last election?

    or did you say:

    3. "what the hack, one vote will not make a difference" and stayed home watching TV, sleeping or doing nothing?

If you did NOT vote, then you gave your vote freely to the government of the day and so, this one vote made a big difference!

So, stop complaining! Get out of your cozy ignorance, get registered as a voter and use your Right to vote for the opposition! And if you think one vote is not enough, then I have a math test for you.

If you convince 10 friends or family members to vote for the opposition and make them to convince ten of their friends to do the same and so on, just calculate how many votes YOU can create for the opposition in the next GE.

But if you still stay home and do nothing, then you HAVE LOST YOUR RIGHT TO COMPLAIN!

SMC is the solution to QEH woe; 1M'sia clinics for Tg Aru, Tawau and S'kan
Published on: Tuesday, November 24, 2009 Email to a friend Printer Friendly

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Medical Centre, which is now fully-owned by the Government, is undergoing refurbishment which is expected to be completed within six months.

Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin said when completed, the new SMC would have 455 beds compared to the present 80 in the facility.

The upgrading or refurbishment exercise would incur the Government RM90 million, she said, explaining that this primarily had to do with the renovation of the top two floors of the SMC to provide for more beds and wards.

The Government takeover of the privately-run SMC was finalised recently with the completion of its sale for RM280 million.

Like the people of Sabah, the Health Ministry is anxious to have the SMC ready for 100 per cent service, said Rosnah after officiating at the 2nd International Conference on Rural Medicine 2009 at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

She said they have requested that work be carried out as fast as possible and completed even before the six-month period.

On opposition Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) continuously harping on Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), she said the SMC is meant to resolve whatever shortage there is in the quest to provide health services to the people.

"We believe the SMC is the solution for what had happened in the QEH.

"That is why we were prepared to purchase another ready-made facility and upgrade it to provide services to the people," she said.

The SMC, nevertheless, does not mean that the Government is lacking in planning to provide better treatment to the people, she said.

She said they are in the process of making proposals to be listed under the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP) where focus is given to the construction of new hospitals and rural health clinics.

She said there would be three 1Malaysia clinics built in Sabah, namely, in Tanjung Aru, Tawau and Sandakan.

Rosnah added that there would also be several changes in terms of ambulance services, among others, to improve medical facilities in the State.

The opposition, she said, always comes up with agendas but that it is the Government which provides the solution.

"Raising issues would not solve the problems but the most important is that the Government through the Health Ministrty is taking the necessary action to resolve these issues," she said.
