Sufficient reasons for Govt to act, says Liew

Kuala Lumpur: Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President Datuk Liew Vui Keong said there were sufficient grounds for the Government to use the ISA on blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin, Seputeh Member of Parliament Teresa Kok and Sin Chew Daily reporter Tan Hoon Cheng.

Liew, who is Deputy International Trade and Industry Ministry, said he was shocked when he heard the news of the detentions Friday night but after being briefed on the reasons for the detention and listening to a statement from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi that the Government would not take such action without reason, he understood why the action was taken.

  1. Memang menghairankan sejak Liew Vui Kiong, Presiden LDP dilantik sebagai Timb Menteri. Beliau telah bertukar menjadi semakin teruk!
    1. Kaki Pengampu/bodek kpd DSAAB(KJ pun tak buat mcm tu).
    2. Membelakangkan kepentingan negeri sendiri. (Pengundi Sandakan pun dah muak & Timb dia pun nak bersara)
    3. S/U Agong LDP dah komen terus pasal kenyataan Ahmad tetapi dia tutup mulut pula.(Mungkin takut kepentingan dia terjejas kot?)
Nampaknya pemimpin dan ahli LDP perlu mengambil langkah berjaga-jag untuk mengelakkan LDP daripada pupus pada pilihanraya akan datang!

  3. Ms tan was arrested for her own safety??? Hahahahaha
    What a Joke...
"Sufficient reasons for Govt to act, says Liew"
Imagine if Ms Tan is a east malaysian can you trust VK Liew to stand up to protect the rights of east malaysian.
East malaysian should be ashamed to have such a leader.
Other BN component party does not support the arrest even Law Minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim stuck his neck out against the Government by condemning the use of the Internal Security Act (ISA)
He said he was also willing to step down as a minister if his actions were deemed to have undermined the Government and Cabinet.
Dont East Malaysian prefer their leader VK liew to be more like Datuk Zaid and fight for the rights of all malaysian rather than fight against the rakyat for the govt.

  7. In case of azan is to loud a fact from my understanding:

Calling from the minaret goes back a long time and in fact was the only way THEN to inform that it was prayertime. Today we have watches and user means of telling us the time to pray. So, why is it so big a deal to tone it down a bit to make life more comfy for everybody in areas where not only Malays are living in? Even in Europe Churches are ask not to ring the big bells in the early morning hours for a long time because they disturbe people around the church. We can have a look at our watch to know it is prayer time, set the alarm or use the moblile phone to remind us. So, in fact there is not reason to make it uncomfortable loud!

Nothing, i would say!how much he knows about the arrest and the rationale behind the arrest? VK Liew is just a follower, a running dog for LDP. people said something, he just follow tune, such a typical coward

  17. This Liew's "Sufficient reasons....." is a lot of rubbish. How on earth an educated one think in this 'lateral' sense?
It is obviously an non-defensible case at all to use ISA in all these instances.
One S Hamed's arguement of "protecting the journalist is totally out-of-touch with reality. It's another load of gabbage statement. How these BN people argue their cases were just radiculous.

Other bloggers, kindly comment what is true of Sabahans' plight n voice it out to this SAPP blogsite that sincerely fights for our Sabahan rights.

Down with BN - UMNO, PBS, LDP n PBRS. These parties are 4-in-1 to continue plundering our wealth n resources to feed the BN UMNO federal leaders; in return they got the Federal Ministerial "money-making" Posts. They forgot about the Sabahans' real poverty levels.

“Her dad did not notice it but she was so pale when we met her. It pains me seeing her like that. I never expected that my daughter who spend 2/3 of her time a day servicing the people, fighting for the people’s interest and right, can end up like this.
    ---------------------------------

As I said before, people should go out and protest. Protesting for the freedom of Teresa is not just for her but for each and everyone of us and our children and grandchildren. The current conditions in Malaysia are intolerable. How can anybody live under a brutal regime that put people in jail indefinitely without trial for complaining about excessive noise? And it compounds the brutality that the allegation wasn’t even true.

The plight of Teresa deserves our sympathy because she obviously is being victimized fighting for our rights. Therefore, for her sake and for our own sake, the people should go out and demonstrate and protest. Not by burning and breaking things but simply march with your family and peacefully. The thugs in the government will know that they cannot get away with their brutal crimes against humanity.

“We have to take action to protect the wishes of the majority,” he (Syed Hamid the Home Minister) said.
    ===========================
There is a common misunderstanding about the nature of democracy. Most people think that the majority can do whatever it wishes. This is not true. Democracy must respect the rights of all people. If the wishes of the majority conflict with the basic rights of the minority, then the rights of the minority would take precedence over the wishes of the majority.

For example, the majority cannot vote to take all the places in the universities. This would violate the rights of the minority to education under the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights. See the UN article below on education.

    http://www.un.org/Overview/rights.html

    Article 26.
    (1) Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and professional education shall be made generally available and higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit.

Please notice that it is specified that everyone has the right to education and that higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit. This means that even if the majority passed a law to take all the places in the universities for themselves, they would be violating the basic human rights of the minority. Therefore, the wishes of the majority to take all the places in the universities cannot be instituted.

From the above example, it is very clear that the function of democracy is not limited to implementing and protecting the wishes of the majority but to protect the rights of all peoples including the rights of the minority no matter how small that minority may be. If democracy protects only the wishes of the majority, then it would be protecting a dictatorship of the majority which is directly contrary to the function of democracy.

The problem with the Malays or at least the racist Malays of UMNO is that they misunderstood the function of democracy. They think that since the Malays are in the majority, therefore, they can pass any law to implement any wish of the Malays. In the process they have marginalized the Chinese, the Indians, and other non-Malays to institute one of the most racist and loathsome regimes on Earth. It is time for these racist Malays to learn the fundamental truth about democracy and rectify their racist ways.

And it is totally wrong for Syed Hamid to justify arresting anybody on the ground of protecting the wishes of the Malay majority. The rights of the minorities in Malaysia have greater claim on the protection of the democratic government of Malaysia over the wishes of the Malay majority. This is why the ideal of Anwar Ibrahim and the PR opposition is consistent with the fundamental role of democracy with their emphasis on equality and justice that respects the basic rights of all peoples. This is also why the racist government of UMNO-BN is totally contrary to the fundamental role of democracy and must be overthrown so that all peoples of Malaysia can finally be secure under a new and truly democratic government.

  26. Lion dance, illusionist steal show at Mooncake Festival

New Sabah Times @15th September, 2008
KOTA KINABALU: The annual Mooncake Festival celebration will not be complete without being part of the Mooncake Festival organized by the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP).

This was the popular notion and feedback from the general masses that gathered at the SAPP Mooncake Festival celebration held at Gaya Street on Saturday night.

The event was the final leg of a series of similar celebrations held in the state capital since last week, starting with the first one in the vicinity of Foh Sang shops followed by a second one in Dah Yeh Villa last Friday.

The Gaya Street’s event attracted an estimated number of 2,000 people, who were treated to a host of spectacular cultural and contemporary performances by local talents comprising students from kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, as well as local dance troupes.

Sabah renowned illusionist, Kevin Lee and his young-and-talented protégé Yvonne Wong stole much of the limelight with their mind-boggling tricks.

The crowd was especially awe-struck with Kevin’s mesmerizing Sichuan mystical art of “Bian Lian” (Changing face), in which he changed multiple Chinese opera facemasks in just split seconds.

And add to that a death-defying performance by internationally-acclaimed SJK © Yick Nam Dragon and Lion Dance Troupe, which won thunderous applauds and cheers from the crowd.

Present at the event along with the crowd were SAPP President Datuk Yong Teck Lee and wife Datin Stella, and its group of Supreme Councillors, Datuk Eric Majimbun, Datuk Liew Teck Chan, Datuk Wong Yit Ming, Datuk Richard Yong, Datuk Frankie Chong, and its Women Chief, Melanie Chia.

What have LDP done for the Chinese in Sabah all along after VK Liew was made Dpty Minister ??? Bodowi' s Balls-polishing all this while to keep his post n forget about fighting for Sabahans' Rights !!

  27. The Sabah Chinese community should send memo/petition to the Sabah Liew clan association to strongly condemn Mr Vicky Liew's insensitive & insulting statment and call for the repeal of his surname by the associsation so as to dissassociate him from the clan as, he's a real disgrace not only to his own clan, family and friends and LDP, but also the entire Chinese community in Sabah.

Like Mohd Sari Nuar@Sari Tan, Vicky too is not qualified to claim to be a leader representing the Chinese community of Sabah.

His statement on the spate of ISA arrests recently certainly does not reflect well on him as a senior politician with a legal background. He is indeed a shame to the Sabah legal fraternity, Malaysia as whole.

He may be a learned person but certainly a rogue and unprincipled one.

As a Chinese & a member of the Liew clan, i'm utterly disgusted and ashamed of him.

Liew.. detained without any formal chargers being made against you. You make me puke lah! Any law that permits a person to be detained without trial is downright cruel and uncivilized. It should be abolished. This type of law is mockery of our judicial system... and this joker is saying that it's o.k. pleeeeeeeesee lah.

Think about it, don't just abolish ISA.
