'Ban sectarian politics'

Banning communal-based political parties, agendas and campaigns could help eliminate sectarian politics and create a Malaysian society free of racial prejudice, said an activist.

Speaking at a political forum in Penang yesterday, Citizens International director Anwar Fazal attributed deeply entrenched sectarian politics in the country to the existence of communal-based parties. By: MK BAthi Veeranggan | Aug 1, 08 11:45am

  1. Teng to Nazri: Talk to us first
    Aug 4, 08 2:03pm
Gerakan vice-president Teng Hock Nan today struck back at suggestions that Umno would be better off negotiating with PKR instead of Islamic party PAS.
    MCPX
In a report by New Straits Times, Minister in Prime Minister's Department Nazri Abdul Aziz said that PAS was never interested in the Malay agenda.

"Instead of talking to Pas, I believe a better bet for some form of unity will be if Umno were to talk to Parti Keadilan Rakyat. It will be easier to sit and talk with them on the Malay-Muslim agenda," Nazri had said in Kuala Kangsar on Saturday.

In an e-mailed statement today, Teng advised the Umno supreme council member to discuss unity issues within the Barisan Nasional fraternity before approaching other parties.

"Nazri should not be so myopic as to talk about the Malay-Muslim agenda," said Teng.

"Rather, Umno should focus its time, effort, energy and attention towards working together with its other component party members to strengthen the structure and functions of BN.

"For Umno as a party, and even BN as a coalition, to remain a relevant political force in the country, both ought to change their mindset towards realising a Malaysian agenda and not just a Malay-Muslim agenda," he added.

Teng added that BN should work for all races and be seen to be representing all the races instead of just one race.

"I would like to advise Nazri Aziz that it would be wise for Umno to discuss and resolve all matters within the BN family first by discussing them at the supreme council before looking outside the coalition," said the former Pulau Tikus state assemblyman.

It recently emerged that Umno had ‘talks' with PAS after the elections, with a view to forming a state government in Selangor.

  2. Rais for No 1: Dr M raises the possibility

Umno veteran Dr Rais Yatim is one of those leaders willing to make sacrifices in order to restore the party to its former glory, according to Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The former premier's stamp of approval for Rais came a day after Muhyiddin Yassin announced that he would not contest for the party president or deputy president but would instead defend his vice-president posts.

Mahathir, who had been Umno president for 22 years, lamented that the party cannot be nursed back to health as long as his successor Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was at the helm.

Based on Mahathir's diagnosis, the remedy for the present Malay feeling of insecurity is not a merger or some kind or cooperation between PAS and Umno.

  3. Why Edward Khoo begins to attack SAPP and Yong Teck Lee now – a historical perspective

Almost everybody knows that both Sabah MCA Chief cum Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Edward Khoo (EK) and SAPP President Datuk Yong Teck Lee (YTL) were like 'abang-adik' (brothers).

But, ever since SAPP fallen out with BN, EK has been going around attacking YTL and SAPP.

This was simply because EK now perceives YTL and SAPP as a major threat to his dream of becoming the next Chinese DCM of Sabah, especially if BN is toppled by PR in the next election with the help of SAPP.

To those who know EK well, this was nothing new but just his true character.

But to those who do not know him well, the below historical tale could perhaps help one to gain an insight of who EK really is.

EK was born with a 'silver spoon' in his mouth as the youngest child of the late Datuk Khoo Siak Chew, the former Deputy Chief Minister of Sabah during the USNO time.

Being the owner of Merdeka Daily News, his family has good control of the media. Before 1985, the paper has backing of the Berjaya Government and thus, doing what was possible to help Parti Berjaya during the general elections. Those poor PBS candidates could hardly get any coverage. They even resorted to paid advertisement but it that was turned down with their cash refunded. Any PBS candidate at that time would probably still remember all these vividly today.

EK was practically unknown before 1985 until that fateful morning on 23 April, 1985,the next day Berjaya was almost wipe out, where he appeared in PBS president, Datuk Joseph Pairin Kitingan's house to claim his total support to PBS and that he helped to topple the Berjaya Government.

In an all out effort to seep into PBS, his prime target at that time was Tan Kit Sher, a fellow Teochew who has strong following in Sandakan. EK had always wanted to follow the footstep of the father – to become another Deputy Chief Minister of Sabah. But, Tan being senior and popular has always controlled his cards well, thereby was regarded by EK as a major stumbling block to realize his dream. However, Tan suffered much later when EK made use of Pairin's ever-greedy wife to enter PBS from the backdoor.

Unsuccessful in Tg. Papat to displace Tan, EK then moved his tentacle to Elopura, attacking the much greener and poorer Tham (who was only 26 at that time). Knowing that Elopura is a Hakka area, EK used his proxy to buy his way through, set up a trap for the young Tham, and later accused him of oweing the Yu Yuan School some money, and wrest the seat for John Liaw, EK's puppet.

Tham later has to borrow money from a friend to settle a donation pledged by a PBS Minister that was never paid til today, to clear his name. It took a lot of pains for Tham to explain to Pairin over the matter and he (Tham) never got his money back from the PBS Minister who reneged on his donation pledge. Even though Tham was given back the seat at last, he once personally told me that he will never forget what EK has done to him for the rest of his life.

Not satisfy with what he had achieved so far, EK continued to undermine everyone, especially using his newspaper to publish news that were not in favour of these PBS YBs.

His opportunity came again in 1994 when Tan and Tham fell out of favour from Pairin. However, he chickened out the last minute and never quite made it to be a candidate.

After the collapsed of the PBS government, he again quickly made his move to switch camp and to declare himself as the strongest supporter of Barisan Nasional. He tried to join SAPP through Yong Teck Lee but was not welcomed. At that time, Sabah MCA was already setup by the late Wong Hee Yung, a former school principal. (MCA always has a deputy in Ministry of Education). Desperate to realize his dream, he again bought his way through to join MCA in KL. EK was loaded as his father was one of the richest timber tycoons during USNO time; he got his timber land while being the acting CM. With a strong support from MCA KL, he returned to Sandakan and outmaneuvered Wong, displacing him as Sandakan MCA Chief. Wong fell ill as a result and never recovered after that.

At the State level, he was facing another veteran – Chau Tet On, who was a DCM during PBS time. Chau was favoured as the MCA state chief. However, EK went all out to capitalize the intimate relationship between Chau and Agnes Shim (once a MCA Senator from Sabah) to the fullest to destroy Chau's image and credibility. But, to be fair, unlike in the case of Chua Soi Lek who was caught in the act with his 'secret lover', till today the so-called intimate relationship of Chau and Agnes remained as rumour as no one has been able to produce any concrete proof of it, even though they were often seen together in public places and functions. Nevertheless, both Chau and Shim had been victimized and never recovered from EK's malicious smear campaign.

EK was also a womanizer and a compulsory gambler. Those who know him well will vouch to this. Hence, in politics, he too likes to gamble. It was an open secret that he used to be a follower of Chua Jui Meng, the former Health Minister who happened to be a Teochew. But when Chua fallen out with MCA leadership, he quickly switched camp to Fong Chan On and later Chua Soi Lek. Now that both Chua and Fong are out too, he quickly realigned himself to Liow Tiong Lai, who is only the youth leader, but nonetheless a full Minister. However, he does not seem to be able to get close to Ong Tee Kiat, who happens to know his colourful background. As usual, he has already 'arranged' someone to 'fix it'.

I am a SAPP supporter. I never liked Peninsular Malaysia parties, be it DAP, MCA or Gerakan. They are all the same. I have no problem with EK joining any of these. After all, we are in a democratic country. What I cannot accept is that, EK not only become a dog, but a running dog of BN. I do not expect him to support SAPP, but at least he should not condemn SAPP and especially Yong, who has been his good friend and close ally. He should at least try to help the Sabah people rather trying to run down on people who try to fight for the interest of Sabah people. I have not seen many leaders trying to fight for Sabah. Yong and Tham had done well here.

I know the agenda of EK, he will continue to destroy all his 'enemies' in politics, hoping to reach the top one day. However, such wicked and selfish move will not only destroy him, but also his Party as well as BN; and one day Malaysia.

For MCA and BN, I could not care less. But i do hope SAPP members can come together to defend YTL and SAPP. Characters like EK are everywhere, letting them go free would be a major political disaster. We must expose them! By exposing them, we get others to do things right, we get people who are of good moral and more principled. I hope MCA will not harbour nor continue to produce these kind of rogue-and-shameless politicians.

Democracy will not work if everyone is waiting for another person to do it or, to fight for them. Period.

    Best Regards,
    EK's Inner Voice

    ---------------------------------

Four your info, there were several factors that contributed to EK's victory in Kepayan in the last two elections and one of them was due to the support and cooperation from other BN component parties especially SAPP and UPKO.

The other factor was the clash between the opposition parties, PKR and DAP and an independent candidate, which thus caused split votes that benefited EK. If you care to study the last election results, the combined votes of DAP and PKR candidates were clearly more than those garnered by EK.

Apart from this, postal votes and perhaps phantom votes also played a significant part in EK's win.

I tend to agree with what EK's Inner Voice said about EK's agenda of attacking SAPP & Yong, after SAPP had fallen out with BN.

This is the best opportunity for him to realise his dream of becoming the next Chinese DCM for Sabah.

This is because if SAPP is expelled from BN on this coming August 6, then probably Raymond Tan too will have to go especially since he had earlier pledged his loyalty to SAPP regardless of whether it is still in or out of BN.

Hence, the question of Raymond Tan leaving SAPP to join another BN component party is slim, unless he reneges on his earlier pledge.

So, with Raymond Tan vacating his DCM seat,EK should have a fairly good chance of succeeding Raymond Tan.

This is because he would automatically become the next most senior Chinese minister in the State Cabinet.

One may ask how about PBS's Dr Yee Moh Chai? Dr Yee's chances may be slimmer as compared to EK due to the fact that PBS has always been regarded as a KDM-based party and, besides the fact that his fate currently hang in balance pending the outcome of the ongoing trial of the Api-Api election petition.

If he is found guilty of an election offence, he will be disqualified and barred from contesting for the next five years. And with his disqualification, he will have to vacate his Cabinet minister post as well.

Based on the news reports of the trial, his future is not so bright.

Therefore, EK realised that this is the best opportunity for him to expedite the departure of SAPP from BN, so that he can realise his dream to become the next DCM.

It would be interesting to see how EK leads the Sabah Chinese community in future, if his 'childhood dream' ever comes true.

Good luck to the Sabah Chinese!

    Beauty & the beast

Everyone knows that liposuction is the most effective way of body contouring. Nonetheless, it is also a very risky treatment to the extent that it could cause death, if not properly done.

There had been many news reports of unnatural death due to failed liposuction treatment in overseas as well as in Malaysia in the past.

Recently, such an unfortunate incident too had come on Sabah's shore - thanks to an unscrupulous beautician by the name of Jessica Lin.

Operating from shophouses in Kota Kinabalu under the names of Dematics Skin Centres and Skin Century Sdn Bhd, not only that her clinics lack the proper set up, she even engaged some Chinese physicians from China whose credentials were dubious to conduct various beautification treatments including liposuction and breast enlargement.

On several occasions patients waiting for their turn at these clinics were terrified to witness horrying scene of another patient undergoing the liposuction treatment.

The entire clinic was filled with very strong smell of blood from dustbin full of blood soaked tissue papers.

A few months ago, another woman patient suffered tremendously after she underwent breast enlargement treatment at one of her clinics.

Her breasts were subsequently infected and badly swollen with puss in them and she had to seek long-term treatment at one of the hospitals now.

However, all these incidents were never reported in the local newspapers as they have been covered up by this beautician, with the help of her influential boyfriend.

Her influential boyfriend is none other than the Sabah MCA Chairman, Datuk Edward Khoo who is also in charge of Sabah medical department.

If you have friends from Sandakan, they could probably tell you something about their intimate relations.

It's rather sad and a shame that a person who held such a high position has no qualm of abusing his position to cover up the crime of his girlfriend, just to satisfy his lust.

  7. "Banning communal-based political parties, agendas and campaigns could help eliminate sectarian politics and create a Malaysian society free of racial prejudice, said an activist."
    ============================
At the beginning of the formation of Malaysia, the slogan was "Malaysia for Malaysians" which presumbably made all races equal. But soon it was Malaysia for the bumis whic made the bumis the first class citizens and the non-bumis the second class citizens. And soon after that after a bloody massacre on May 13, it was ketuanan Melayu which made the Malays the first class citiznes, the non-Malay natives the second class citizens and the Chinese and other non-Malays the third class citizens.

The marginalization of the Chinese was so blatant and brazen that millions of Chinese were deported or made so desponsent of their future in Malaysia that they left. The proportion of the Chinese declined from some 33% in 1963 to less than 25% today overall in Malaysia. In Sabah the proportion of Chinese declined from some 33% in 1963 to less than 10% today. Mr. Lee Kuang Yew condemned this marginalization repeatedly for decades. But running dogs such as MCA and Gerakan whitewashed this marginalization to the world so that anybody who condemned the racism of the Malays were themselves condemned as agitating racism.

It is against this background that I question whether it is possible for true racial harmony in Malaysia without a large Chinese proportion in the overall population. The combination of Chinese, Indians, and the non-Malay natives are still some 45% or more. And with the help of moderate Malays such as the PKR under Anwar Ibrahim they could take control of the government to institute equality and justice. But if the Chinese and the Indians were to be absorbed into non-communal parties, the Malays would dominate again and the interests of the Chinese would be overridden by the Malay agendas. And without a communal Chinese party, the Chinese would have no political power at all to challenge such racial inequalities as ketuanan Melayu and all the unjust laws such NEP.

One reason why the Malays are now calling for the banning of communal parties is because the Chinese are now effectively flexing their political power and are threatening to defeat the UMNO Malay party. Now that the Malays see they are on the verge of losing to the Chinese, the Indians, and the non-Malay natives, they want to neutralize this threat by eliminating the Chinese, Indian, and non-Malay native parties. Therefore, it is even more important that the Chinese, the Indians, and the non-Malay natives maintain their parties and fight for their equal rights against ketuanan Melayu and NEP.

If the Malaysian people want true racial equality, then they could form alliances combining several communal parties. There is nothing wrong with that. PR, for instance, is composed of DAP and PKR which respectively represent the Chinese and the Malays with a few Indians mixed in.

I've also said that the parties in Sabah and Sarawak should form a Pan-Borneo Alliance composed of the several parties to gain greater power and influence. It would be a very bad mistake if they allow themselves to be absorbed into a big UMNO party which just gobble up the current BN parties. Then there will be no Chinese parties to fight for the rights of the Chinese. And UMNO can in one fell swoop destroy all possible oppositions who might fight against ketuanan Melayu and maintain ketuanan Melayu forever. And all the Chinese MPs within a Malay dominated multiracial party will be like the MCA, MIC, and Gerakan in BN who will forever be the henchmen of the Malay special rights.

Of course, while remaining the Chinese communal party, there can be a separate wing for people of other races. For example, DAP while remaining a Chinese party has taken on some non-Chinese members. This is perfectly all right so long as it continues to be recognizable as a Chinese party and dedicated to fighting for the rights of the Chinese. And beyond the interests of the Chinese, it could and should fight for the rights of all races equally.

In the final analysis, it is unlikely that a non-communal party with dominant Malay influence will ever be dedicated to fighting for the rights of the non-Malays. Therefore, it is especially important that the Chinese maintain their communal political parties which will be dedicated to fighting for the rights of the Chinese by fighting for the equal rights of all. And the call of the Malays for the banning of communal parties is nothing more than a cheap trick to destroy the rising power and influence of the Chinese. Therefore, the Chinese must be vigilant and not fall for this cheap trick. On the contrary, the Chinese must expand their power by increasing their cohesiveness and unity which ultimately is the source of their power.

Unless and until the Malays as a whole are ready to give up ketuanan Melayu, the Chinese, the Indians, and the non-Malay natives must maintain and increase their communal parties. And since I see no evidence that the Malays are ready to give up their Malay supremacy and NEP laws, the Chinese must not fall for a dangerous trick that will rob them of their last chance to fight for and get equality in Malaysia.

  9. The conspiracy theorists have got this one right
    Wong Kok Keong | Aug 4, 08 4:33pm
Based on what the police, ministry of health and Umno leaders in government have been saying in response to the leaked medical report by Puswari's Dr Mohamed Osman Abdullah, it is clear they have made up their minds to pooh-pooh the medical report and insist that the only relevant and legal report is the one issued by Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

They have already tried to downgrade Dr Mohamed Osman’s medical report to merely notes from a non-specialist who only performed a superficial examination. Further, the leaked document will be used by the authorities and Umno to cast aspersions on Pusrawi Hospital, raising doubts on its and its doctors’ credibility and professionalism to further justify their attempt to rubbish the leak.

But, really, what is the difference between notes given by a doctor to a patient in writing as opposed to proper reports? If such ‘notes’ are irrelevant or meaningless as the authorities seem to suggest, does this not mean that all patients could and should ignore the ‘notes’ they routinely get from doctors upon medical consultation and insist on being given ‘reports’ (however it might appear) before they agree with the doctor's diagnosis and drug prescription, that are also the basis of reference to which other doctors make?

Further, if ‘reports’ are more formal communication than ‘notes’, shouldn’t the content of a ‘report’ be based on what’s in the ‘notes’, hence similar for both forms of communication?

Dr Mohamed Osman obviously is not a specialist and did not act like one. All he did was to give his medical observation. It must also be noted that Saiful did not seek out a specialist at that point. And based on anyone's experience with doctors, Dr Mohamed Osman performed like a doctor, even down to the scribble of a doctor’s handwriting!

Saiful told the doctor he believed he was sodomised. But the doctor observed that his overall demeanour did not appear to match one who had undergone such a trauma. The doctor also did not find evidence of skin tearing, active bleeding and of traces of pus. What then should he conclude?

That Saiful was still sodomised because Saiful insisted he was? Further, when the doctor wrote ‘to rule out’ (TRO) sodomy, he even suggested that Saiful go to a government hospital since he continued to insist he was sodomised.

What all of the above suggests is the doctor could not be faulted at all as a professional. That should give credence to what he has written down unequivocally for Saiful and that it is a product of his professionalism.

It is fine for the ministry of health to punish the hospital for the leaked report or whoever the culprit might be. But that should not take away anything from the professionalism that Dr. Mohamed Osman exhibited when examining Saiful and when writing down what his medical observation told him.

The two - punishing the culprit for the leak and Dr Mohamed Osman’s professionalism - should not be treated as the same. The former should not be made to cast doubt on the latter.

All the above should obviously be given due consideration in a court of law if or when Anwar is charged for sodomy against Saiful. Ultimately, it comes down to the presiding judge as to how he or she is going to treat the above and rule on them. Given what had transpired in court at Anwar’s first sodomy trial, one cannot help but have a bad feeling that Anwar may end up denied the rule of law again.

Some might say but was not Anwar exonerated finally when the high court overturned the lower court’s ruling that found him guilty of the first sodomy? Yes. The problem is that, by the time of the high court’s ruling, Anwar had been in jail for corruption and not allowed to enter politics until April of this year. His political career was derailed at a time when he was close to becoming the PM until now.

This second sodomy charge now cannot but be seen as another attempt to derail his political career again. And should Anwar be found guilty by another kangaroo court, it would ‘kill’ off Anwar politically for good this time given his age, again at a time when he appears close to becoming PM or at least returning to parliament as opposition leader.

Sceptics and critics will say all this is nothing but a conspiracy theory. But there are conspiracy theories and there are conspiracy theories. This is one precisely because it is backed by far too many unexplained questions, irregularities and apparent evidence to strongly suggest that this second sodomy charge against Anwar is politically-motivated.

People who blindly and readily toss this notion of conspiracy theory to make their case are actually not using their intelligence and good sense. They invoke this idea of a conspiracy theory in order to dismiss the issue out of hand because they really do not have any good logical arguments to counter what has been presented.

This kind of response is actually more a mindless or knee jerk response based on nothing more than the general sentiment that denigrates a conspiracy theory just by mentioning its name. Such people are ignorant of the evidence or not giving it the proper intelligent treatment.

And they are usually the same people as those who blindly believe in our institutions of the judiciary and law enforcement and are fond of mindlessly saying, ‘Let’s just stand aside and let the police and the courts do their job’.

This despite all these years - since the time of Dr Mahathir Mohamad as PM - that showed how both institutions have been bent, twisted or threatened to serve the interests of the BN government.

These folks are actually far more damaging to the well-being and future of a democratic Malaysia that aspires to be nothing more than having all Malaysians governed by the rule of law.

  11. Police reports lodged against 'racist' teacher

    Aug 5, 08 2:07pm Malaysiakini
Two police reports have been lodged against a secondary school History teacher for allegedly uttering racial slurs against Indian students.
MCPXThe reports, lodged by two students from SMK Telok Panglima Garang last Friday, stated that a female history teacher had allegedly called Indian students ‘keling pariah', ‘Negro' and ‘black monkeys', amongst other derogatory names.

In the report, the Form Four and Form Five student said the teacher purportedly told students during class that ‘Indians came from dogs', Indians are ‘children of prostitutes' and the community is stupid.

They also allege that teacher had said the community youth ‘did not have testicles', ‘always menstruates' and indulged in thuggery and theft.

The teacher in the Hulu Langat school had also purportedly beaten some Indian students and punished them with push ups if they were late for class.

The Form Four student in his report said students were "ashamed and embarrassed" by these incidents.

"She told the Indian students to stand up and said she wanted to test how we would react to the word ‘keling pariah'.

"We said we did not like it and she raised her voice and repeatedly called us ‘keling pariah' and wrote the words on the blackboard," his report stated.

    Ministry awaiting report

According to the Star, Coalition of Malaysian Indian NGOs secretary Gunaraj George said the exposure to such verbal abuse will only breed hatred and racial polarisation in schools.

"No one in his or her right frame of mind would have said these things. Given this, the best option would be for the teacher to be assigned to a desk job and not be allowed to be near youngsters anymore," he was quoted as saying after handing in the police reports to the school authorities.

Deputy Education Minister Dr Wee Ka Siong reportedly said the schoolteacher might be sacked if the allegations are proven to be true but is awaiting an official report before taking any action.

Meanwhile, the school when contacted, said they were not permitted to give a statement as the matter is currently being investigated by the police.

Its headmaster Nordin Bin Saad is on leave and was not available for comment.

Tamil dailies today reported that about 1,000 angry parents and members of the public gathered at the school yesterday to show their anger against the teacher.

  15. Dear EK's Inner Voice, don't be so naive to think that only SAPP could recognise a "window of opportunity". EK is also smart enough to know that bah.

Like the politicians always said, there's no permanent enemies and friends in politics!

So, like SAPP and Yong, EK just has to do what he has to do at the right time. It's strictly politics, nothing personal!

Illegals without criminal record deserve PR: Rizalman
Tenom: Umno division chief, Datuk Rizalman Abdullah said the Government should consider granting Permanent Residence (PR) status to illegal immigrants who have been staying in Sabah for more than 25 years with no criminal record.
    -------------------
another assxxxx...illegal is illegal and if they can evade the law for 25 years, it is not surprising becoz they can easily change identity numerous times vor lose their identity and how can the police track them?

by legalizing them will lead to massive abuses by ketua kampungs, commissioner of oaths, ybs etc with extra $$$$$ into their dirty pockets.

    ===========================

I agree fully with anti-pti. It is not surprising that that an UMNO chief will advocate granting permanent residence to the illegal immigrants. But in contrast the UMNO-BN government continues to deny permanent residence to Chinese who have been legally in Sabah for more than 40 years who are model citizens and have millions of assets.

It should be pointed out again that the motive of the UMNO is to racially cleanse the Chinese out of Sabah while increasing the proportion of the Muslims to maintain control for the Malays. Therefore, no permanent residence should be granted to the illegals. But at the same time the immigration laws should be changed to grant permanent residence to legal immigrants who have been here for more than 15 years and have assets of more than 250,000 ringgits. New laws should also be implemented to encourage the immigration of Chinese into Sabah especially those with higher education and capital who can develop the Sabahan economy for the benefit of all Sabahans.

As long as the Malays continue to play the race game, it is vital that the Chinese maintain their own political parties to fight for their equal rights.

This reminds me of “The Wizard of Oz” where, if memory serves, the Tin Man asked for a university degree so that what he said can be taken as wisdom. The truth is the truth whether it is spoken by an expert or reported on an official form. Furthermore, the report made by Dr. Mohamad Osman was obviously intended to be a complete report on his full examination of Saiful’s anal condition. Since there was no indication of Saiful having been sodomized, the report is clear and official.

I guess any report that is official has to conform to what the UMNO wishes.

  21. It is obviously the wish of every Chinese in Malaysia to live in a country without marginalization where justice and equality prevails for all. But for a Malay at this point in time to talk about eliminating racial bigotry by eliminating communal political parties without first eliminating ketuanan Melayu, ketuanan Islam and NEP and all kinds of rcist policies and dogmas is simply a cheap trick to hoodwink the Chinese and other non-Malays.

I'll be happy to agree to banning communal based political parties if these conditions were met first:

    1. eliminate ketuanan Melayu;

    2. eliminate ketuanan Islam;

    3. abolish NEP and all laws that follow from this such as the special rights of the Malays and bumis in getting educational scholarships, business licenses and permits, etc.;

    4. change the constitution to eliminate all special rights of the Malays and bumis;

    5. change the immigration laws to give citizenship to all Chinese now living legally in Malaysia;

    6. change the immigration laws to give permanent residence to all Chinese who are not living in Malaysia now but has investment and assets of more than 250,000 ringgits for more than 15 years;

    7. change the immigration laws to allow the immigration of Chinese into Malaysia if they have college education and investment capital of more than 500,000 ringgits; these should be given permanent residence immidiately and citizenship after 5 years;

    8. increase the population of the Chinese to equal the population of the Malays (currently the Malays number some 13 million out of a total Malaysian population of some 26 million. The Chinese now number only some 6.5 million. This means the Chinese should be increased by some 6.5 million or more over the next several years so that they will equal the Malays in population.)

If the above conditions were met, then I support the banning of communal parties. Until then, the banning of communal parties is just a cheap trick to suppress the Chinese politically. After the painful experience of the last 45 years of heinous marginalization, the Chinese should be smart enough now to recognize this for what it really is - a cheap and dirty trick to suppress the Chinese and deny them the political organization to fight for their basic human rights.

Obviously the recent cohesiveness and exertiveness of the Chinese have put the fear into the hearts of the racist Malays. Now that they see they cannot fight the political might of the united Chinese, they want to eliminate the political parties of the Chinese. The Chinese should just laugh in the face of these stupid Malays who are stupid enough to think they can fool the Chinese with such a transparent trick.

  22. Serious Blow to Malaysia’s Image and Risk to Malaysia-US Relationsby Din Merican*

Malaysians are most concerned by a recent article written by a “Concerned Malaysian”, which appeared on August 2, 2008 in a widely read web-blog, Malaysia-Today. It relates to the widely speculated re-appointment of Tan Sri Ghazali Sheikh Khalid as Malaysian Ambassador to the United States.

This is the second time that Malaysia-Today (MT) has carried a commentary on this re-appointment of Ghazali Sheikh Khalid who bears heavy baggage from his last ’stink’ in Washington DC.

Concern of Serving Officers in Wisma Putra

A second tour of duty of this nature is raising a hue and cry in Kuala Lumpur, both at Wisma Putra and in the Malaysian Civil Service on the two fundamental grounds.

First, it is about the manner in which this re-appointnent is being made and its implications for the morale of professional foreign service officers, not to mention the very institution of Wisma Putra itself. Re-appointing a retired Ambassador to a senior position abroad is a slap in the face of deserving, serving officers.

Second, there is much concern in many quarters in Malaysia–no less so in the United States–regarding Ghazali Shiekh’s re-appointment as our representative in Washington DC, given his rather dim track record during his previous posting in the same capacity there.

No less serious is the trepidation and risk that Ghazali Shiekh Khalid’s re-appoinment is a grave misjudgment on the part of Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi.

Links to a Jewish Lobbyist and now a felon

Ghazali Sheikh Khalid has been clearly identified as a conduit for Malaysian GLCs (government linked corporations) and other benefactors to make illegal payments to the notorious Jewish lobbyist, Jack Abramoff, to secure an appointment for the then Malaysian Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Bin Mohamad, with President George W. Bush in 2002.

Abramoff was investigated, tried and convicted and he is now serving time in the United States.

During the US Senate investigations, numerous leading American newspapers, The Washington Post among them, reported that there was a clearly established money trial including documentary evdience by way of invoices, from the Malaysian Embassy in Washington DC to Abramoff. Funds were also reportedly channelled to various right wing think tanks.

No less serious were slanderous allegations concocted to project Anwar Ibrahim as an Islamic extremist. Even attempts were made to obtain false testimony against Anwar from a limo driver in Washington DC. Many also believe that the Embassy was fully aware of shenanigans which were being hatched in Kuala Lumpur for the Anwar trials in 1998.

It would be recalled that questions about the Embassy’s possible involvement including Ghazali’s was raised in our Parliament in 2005, but no satisfactory answer was provided by the then Foreign Minister, Dato’ Seri Syed Hamid Albar.

Details, as pointed out above, of the Abramoff Affair and its link to the Malaysian Embassy in Washington DC were covered widely by articles and reports in the United States. They include The Los Angeles Times (February 16, 2006) entitled ” Malaysia reportedly paid US1.2 million to lobbyist”; The National Journal, an influential magazine covering inside affairs in the White House and in the US Congress, carried an article on September 30, 2006, captioned “K Street Scandal: The Fallen”; The Washington Post in June, 2007 published a special report entitled ” Investigating Abramoff”, giving a complete account of Abramoff’s dealings.

    Illegal Payments by Malaysian Government

These and other articles, besides reporting on illegal payments, also cited the involvement of Abramoff in meetings with the Malaysian Ambassador and Presidential Advisor, Karl Rove, to help arrange the Mahathir-Bush meeting of 2002 in the White House.

Transfer of US1.2 million by Malaysians to Abramoff

These write-ups are truly damning expose of the illegality, intrigues and hypocrisy of the Mahathir Administration and our then Ambassador in Washington, using various GLCs and other benefactors to channel US1.2 million of public and shareholder funds to Abramoff through the American International Center, a bogus think tank that an Abramoff partner, Michael P.S. Scanlon, set up at a Delware beach house.

Those articles alleged that several other lobbying firms and think tanks also received Malaysian funds. They include Abramoff’s own firm, Greenberg Taurig, and other firms such as Bell Haven which, in turn, paid yet other lobbying firms, such as Harbour Group, Alexander Strategies Group and Westerb Strategy Group.

    Visit US Senate Website

Details of these and other arrangements exposed in the US Senate Committee’s report which can be perused in the Senate’s website.

Further investigations into the corrupt activities of Abramoff are ongoing and the probability of Malaysian business ethics being exposed to the American public and the rest of the world should this affair be brought into the US courts is very high. Indeed, it is a very distrubing prospect!

    Possible Indictment of Ghazali Sheikh

Although Ghazali Sheikh may avoid being indicted for what are seen as illegal activities inconsistent with his diplomatic status, there is a high risk of the media in the US publicising his past.

In fact, there have been attempts in the power centers of Washington DC to expose this criminal Abramoff scheme to the extent of even calling Ghazali Sheikh to testify in the United States. It is no secret that there are Democrats in both Senate and House of Representatives who would want Ghazali Sheikh to account for his connections to the convicted Abramoff, who continues to be under investigation for other criminal activities.

    Unauthorised Lobbying

Officers at Wsima Putra have long known that since his retirement in 2006, this former Malaysian Ambassador to the United States had shamelessly been lobbying hard in the Malaysia corridors of power, past and present, without regard to whatever the cost to the Malaysian Foreign Service and his own self esteem.

The incumbent Prime Minister’s singling out this particular retired diplomat is causing considerable frustration, disenchantment and anger, to say the very least, among able and future diplomats, who see the prospects for their further career advancement shut, not to mention undermining the reputation of an important institution of state as well as ignoring the serious consequences that are likely to follow should Ghazali Sheikh be re-appointed to Washington DC.

    Foreign Minister Dr. Rais Yatim

It is indeed noteworthy that this said reappointment must be view one that goes against the professional judgment of Foreign Minister, Dr. Rais Yatim, who is committed to restoring the standing and integrity of Wisma Putra which had been seriously impaired by his predecessor–an institution which once was a leading light in the country and the region.

One does not know the views of Foreign Minister, Dr. Rais Yatim, of course, but knowing the man himself, he would certainly oppose this re-appointment as he can foresee the controversy and problems that can arise, not only in terms of Malaysia-US relations with the next American Administration that will take office in January, 2009 and, worse still, Malaysia’s image abroad.

It is rather disturbing that according to Malaysia-Today in its August 2 posting, MITI (MInsitry of International Trade and Industry) sources confirmed that Ghazali Sheikh took the opportuntiy of the recent 8th Round of the US-Malaysia Free Trade talks ( July 14-18, 2008 ) held in Washington DC to meet US officials there to lobby the Bush Administration to support his re-appointment.

    Endangering Malaysian national interest

Ghazali Sheikh’s backdoor diplomacy must surely compromise Malaysian national interest as he will be beholden to American interests, thus he will be incapable to honestly and effectively represent Malaysia. There is no such thing as a free lunch, particularly in the US.

Worse still, such lobbying, even before Wisma Putra has officially sought Washington DC’s concurrence to Ghazali Sheikh’s re-appointment is unheard off in diplomatic practice. I recall that when I was in Wisma Putra in the 1960s, my colleagues and I were incessantly reminded to abide by the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Practice, and not to deviate from the norms of diplomatic practice.

Possible Breach of Official Secrets Act

Ghazali Sheikh’s lobbying in the US may well be a breach of our Offficial Secrets Act as he had communicated with a foreign government on a sensitive matter concerning the government’s intent to make a diplomatic appointment. This is the extent of his desperation.

    Smear Campaign against Anwar Ibrahim

Furthermore, Ghazali Sheikh is alledged to have used his recent visit to Washington to smear Anwar Ibrahim over the recent “Sodomy II”, as he once apparently did as Mahathir’s Ambassador. Such actions are indisputably unprofessional and unbecoming of a public servant who must remain above the fray of partisan domestic politics.

An ambassador is expected– as others and I have been to do–to defend Malaysia’s national interest and never to be dragged into gutter political partisanship.

Rais Yatim-Condoleeza Rice Talks in Singapore

Ironically, Ghazali Sheikh was apparently engaged in muck raking in Washington at the very moment that Foreign Minister Dr Rais Yatim was meeting US Secretary of State, Dr. Condoleeza Rice, on the sidelines of the ASEAN Annual Ministerial Meeting in Singapore to soothe the fallout from the detention of PKR de factor leader, Anwar Ibrahim, over his alleged sodomy.

The long and short of the reappointment of Ghazali Sheikh is that US officials and others in the power centers in Washington DC are at best chagrined and disturbed over his behavior and conduct.

The consensus among Americans and Malaysians in the US is that they would rather that the Malaysian Prime Minister not proceed with his intention to re-post Ghazali Sheikh as the new ambasador to Washington DC in the best interest of Malaysia-US relations, not to mention Malaysia’s image. They believe that there is a clear and growing danger that Ghazali Shiekh’s re-appointment may once again bring bilateral relations to a hostile and acrimonious state as was the case under Mahathir. This is a course that Abdullah Badawi must avoid at all costs.

The New US Administration in 2009

These “American friends of Malaysia” as well as our citizens living, working and studying there believe that Abdullah Badawi should not begin our relations with the new US Administration on a sour note. It is, therefore, incumbent on the Prime Minister not to proceed with Ghazali Sheikh’s re-appointment as the Malaysian Ambassador to the United States.

By way of background, Ghazali Sheikh Khalid was never a political officer in its true sense. I am told that most of his positions in Wisma Putra and abroad have been administrative in nature. He, therefore, had to rely on his connections and close to certain key ministers of the Mahathir Administration for career advancement.

In fact, Ghazali Sheikh lobbied to be Secretary-General of Wsima Putra but he was rejected by Abdullah Badawi, then transitting from Wisma Putra to the post of Deputy Prime Minister, and the new Foreign Minister, Syed Hamid Albar did not want him to be in that key post, preferring the professional and sedate Tan Sri Fuzi Razak. As consolation, Ghazali Sheikh was then sent to Washington DC.

That he should now be considered for this key position as Ambassador to the world’s remaining superpower seems to suggest to me that there are dark forces operating on the 4th Floor, Prime Minister’s Department who see Ghazali Sheikh Khalid as a willing accomplice in their latest attempts to discredit Anwar Ibrahim and block his political moves towards Putrajaya. I need not mention who that dark character, a Darth Vader like character, is.

  23. Retards and blockheads

In the bid to diffuse the situation, the police have told Bar Council to wrap up its forum by 10am.

The protesters, many of whom are from Muslim welfare organsation Perkida and Islamic party PAS, shouted, “Hancur Bar Council” (Crush Bar Council), “Hidup Islam” (Long Live Islam) and “Batal forum” (Cancel the forum).

They are carrying placards saying “Jangan cabar Islam” (Don’t challenge Islam) and “Bar Council, Don’t play with fire”.

Among the protest leaders seen in the crowd are PAS Youth chief Salahuddin Ayub and Zulkifli.

The protesters, many of whom came just before the forum began, later decided to sit down in front of the Bar Council building and vowed that they would not budge until the event had been cancelled.

Some threatened to storm the building to physically stop the forum

Among the speakers at the forum was syariah lawyer Mohd Haniff Khatri Abdulla. Mohd Haniff represented the Federal Territory’s Islamic Religious Council in the case of R Subashini. K Shanmuga and Ravi Nekoo, who were counsel for Subashini and S Shamala, respectively, also spoke.

The forum is moderated by Zarizana Abdul Aziz of the Women's Centre for Change.

Former Syariah judge and currently the Federal Territory Islamic Department’s syariah prosecutor Dr Mohd Naim Mokhtar pulled out as a panel speaker earlier.

The demonstration was generally peaceful, but several forum participants were subjected to verbal abuse and profanities when they exited the Bar Council building.

Shouts of “babi”, “pengkhianat” and “balik China” were heard as forum participants trickled out of the venue.

Speaking to reporters later, Zulkifli said that he had led a delegation of four individuals representing the protesters to state their position with Bar Council president Ambiga Sreevenasan and vice president K Ragunath.
