CM must guarantee KK High Court and State Library lands for public purpose only

KOTA KINABALU - If there is no satisfactory guarantee by the Chief Minister that the KK High Court land and the City Library site will be reserved for public use, then SAPP's two assemblymen will raise this issue at the coming State Legislative Assembly later this month.

Accordingly to the assemblywoman for Luyang, Melanie Chia Chui Ket, she and fellow SAPP assembly person, Datuk Liew Teck Chan of Likas, will raise this issue in accordance with the Standing Orders of the Assembly.

"We hope this Cabinet will not be irresponsible and refuse to entertain this issue of public interest by abusing the so-called "defeated by time" tactic like when the BN leaders avoided debate on the Saham Amanah Sabah (SAS) issue two years ago," said Melanie when contacted on her views of the current issue over the fate of the High Court and library sites. It is learnt that the Legislative Assembly will sit on 16, 17 and 18 July.

"We will raise this issue because the assemblyman for the Api Api constituency, within which the High Court and Library are situated, has refused to promise that these public lands will be retained for public purpose. Many people in Kota Kinabalu, including the Luyang and Likas constituencies, have expressed their worries about the loss of urban public lands, the threats to the Likas Wetlands and Atkinson Clock Tower, the State Railway reserve and KK Sea Front, among others," said Melanie.

"We will wait until Monday for the Chief Minister to promise that these city centre lands will be protected and reserved for public purpose before we take further action on raising this issue at the Assembly," said Melanie.

The Api Api assemblyman for 14 years, who is also a Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Dr. Yee Moh Chai, has so far refused to commit to protect these city centre lands including the DBKK building and the Women and Children Clinic next to the Chong Thien Vun Park.

  23. All the while when SAPP helmed the State Government with Yong Teck Lee as the Chief Minister, he did many destructive things, chief among them giving away valuable land to outsiders, the very people he chooses to attack this time around. In a mere two years, a huge chunk of Sabah ’s wealth fell into the wrong hands.

  24. When YTL was the chief minister, lands allocated to natives were actually ‘stolen’ and given to public-listed companies. A good example is the Tongod Region where not less than 20,000 acres of land earlier set aside for native socio-economic projects, under the ‘Tongod Regional Planning Study’, mooted during the Berjaya era, were given away to a public-listed company. This is blatant Daylight Robbery!!

  25. As a consequence, the impoverished and largely hardcore poor of Tongod lost their ancestral lands and became ‘refugees’ on their own land, setting up ‘sulaps’ along the road bordering their stolen land, eating dust induced by passing vehicles, everyday. To add insult to injury, the mega companies that now occupy the ‘stolen’ lands, evicted them and bulldozed even their dilapidated dwellings.

and now SAPP goes around trying to champion the rights and native customary lands. This is World-Class Hypocrisy!!
