Elected local government should be considered again by Malaysia
20 February 2006: In Malaysia, the deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s department, Datuk M. Kayveas, caused a furore recently when he called local authorities "secret societies" because of the lack of transparency and accountability, highlighted by public concern over mismanagement, wastage of public funds on overseas junkets under the pretext of study tours, approvals for deforestation of land causing untold damage to the environment, lack of enforcement, bribery and corruption in local townships.

  4. It is up to the people to decide whether they want local council elections. This can be revived if the people desire it. With local council elections held periodically, the people have a final say on whether a certain candidate has done his job conscientiously or not. He or she cannot take the people for granted, he or she has to perform. Just like a pupil in school, show your report card!
