Church fire-bombing incidents an indictment of our Malaysian Society

Datuk Yong Teck Lee: "The culprits who fire-bombed the three Churches must be brought to justice as soon as possible.

"Justice done will repair, even if to a limited extent, the deep fractures inflicted on Malaysian society by such cowardly actions. Ordinary people who are not deeply involved in religious matters have suddenly become agitated by these incidents. This is a dangerous polarization that is spreading to a wider section of our society.

"Sabah is still relatively free of racial and religious tensions. Our harmony is something that Sabahans are proud of. We should resist the importation of racial and religious extremism from entering our society. This is part of the non-racial civil society that is part of the SAPP platform,"

Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah lashed out at Umno today over its strident position on the “Allah” controversy, pointing out that the party was bent on fanning communal sentiment and digging itself into an intolerant hardline position with no parallel in the Muslim world.

Umno and a number of Muslim NGOs have been in an uproar over the recent High Court ruling allowing the Catholic church’s Herald newspaper to use the word “Allah” to refer to God in its Bahasa Malaysia section.

The government has filed an appeal against the ruling and yesterday it won a stay of execution.

The Islamist PAS, however, has backed the court’s ruling by pointing out that the word “Allah” can be used by those of the Abrahamic faiths — Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

  1. I think only in Malaysia, we see a word "Allah" can cause all the madness of who and who "owns" it.

  2. Culprits who did it can't really help to preach their good religion or consider themselves believer in "Allah"'s name!
Instead they are misled by "Syaitan" or evil spirit and should not be here in our world too. Go to hell please.

  4. Remove race and religion from the equation and society will be unified, importantly solidified.

I'm dumbfounded while reading comments from Christian leaders in Sabah, even while I'm attending dialogues with Christian leaders in Kuala Lumpur.

Calling Christians to give way and forget about using the sacred word of Allah?I can accept that from others, but coming from "so-called" political Christian leaders from Barisan Nasional in Sabah???

Hypocrites of the highest order. This is where you see how important positions and MONEY changes a person.

These leaders must be shown the exit at the next general elections.

  5. Guys this has nothing to do with religion or races!

    This has 2 goals!

First goal to create racial tension so that the government of the day has the "RIGHT" to place Malaysia under martial law - thats the longterm plan to avoid GE13!

Second goal and short term goal: to take ppls mind away from all the shit hitting the fan like Anwar's court case, all the corruption cases, the killed Teo and so on. Add what you know already!

This all can be achieved when we have the emergency law in place - everything is taken away and "solved" and UMNO BN can stay in power like the military rulers in other countries. They have no worries anymore because EVERY Malaysian has to stay calm or face jail. And I mean every Malaysian because then there is NO DIFFERENCE anymore between races or religions!

  6. Ini semua old scounts games they're playing with.....

They are all like "chickens"...

Si Mandiang Chai mati kita datang beri hormat, anak si Galintau Kawin..kita turut menari sumazau... Kedai Kopi Nam Fong kita sama duduk minum... bukan macam semananjung...

    Hai...hai sedarlah...sedarlah....

    KEPERCAYAAN KEPADA TUHAN

Bukan allah pun. Is that mean the RUKUN NEGARA is only applicable to non muslim since it doesn't refer to muslim god name allah?

  9. US issues travel advisory for Sabah

KUALA LUMPUR: The United States warned its citizens Friday that criminals and terrorists could be plotting attacks on foreigners in Sabah.

“There are indications that both criminal and terrorist groups are planning or intend acts of violence against foreigners in eastern Sabah, notwithstanding the government of Malaysia’s increased ability to detect, deter and prevent such attacks,” according to a travel advisory posted on the website of the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

The advisory noted that al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf militants based in the southern Philippines, which is a short boat ride from Sabah, have kidnapped foreigners from Sabah’s secluded resort areas in the past.

It urged Americans to “avoid or use extreme caution” in connection to travel plans to those areas.

Police officials contacted in Sabah said they were not immediately aware of the advisory and declined to commen

Letter to the churches in Malaysia
    Geneva, 13 January 2010

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It is with profound sorrow that we heard the news of churches being attacked in different parts of Malaysia and of the nine church buildings firebombed during the past five days due to the controversy over the use of the word "Allah" for God by non-Muslims.

While Christians in majority Muslim countries all over the world, including your neighbouring country Indonesia, have used the word "Allah" for God for centuries, it is very disturbing to hear about this new controversy generated by a small sector of Muslims opposing the use of "Allah" for God by Christians. In fact, this action will only challenge tolerance and restrict religious freedom as well as negatively affecting the "One Malaysia" policy commitment made by the government which aims to ensure that racial harmony becomes a central policy for the country.

The World Council of Churches, as a fellowship of churches around the world, remains deeply concerned about these developments of communal disharmony. We hope for an immediate action by both the government and civil society to resolve the conflict, in order to avoid renewed hostilities and escalation of violence in society.

While appreciating the statement from the Prime Minister of Malaysia that "violence has not been part of the practice of religion in Malaysia" we hope that immediate measures will be taken to resolve the problem and that all perpetrators of these acts of violence will be brought to justice. It is heartening to see that numerous Islamic organizations and leaders have publicly condemned these wanton acts of a small group of people.

As you pass through this time of trouble and anxiety, we express our solidarity with all members of the churches and we call upon churches in Malaysia to continue their search for peace. We pray for peace and reconciliation among the people of different faiths and communities in your nation. May God Almighty strengthen you to "seek peace and pursue it" (Psalm 34:14).

    Yours in Christ's love,

    Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit

    WCC general secretary

  13. Do you believe there is a God?

Frankly, I don't give a damn...Humans are creating their gods whatever, to believe or to make religion as a tool to control humans.

If there is a God, does he or she want to make the world a place where people fight because of religion?

If he is a god, he can change the whole human race into believing only HIM!

Why he cannot do it? Is because there is no God!

God is only a entity that people created!

    Wasamalaikum!

  15. Use of Allah or not is no big deal. People who are so narrow-minded to think that the word Allah is owned by them alone...

As to me, Allah, God, Tuhan....and so forth for hundreds of references does not concern me.

It is purely moronic to think that the word Allah belongs to muslims in malaysia...

    Paranoia is the word!

Jan 21, 10 1:25pmTwo surau in Muar came under arson attack early this morning, with one sustaining serious damage.

According to the police, the surau are located some two kilometres apart.

Let us strongly condemn such attacks against the suraus also...Some people are just trying to make chaos by inciting both parties.

As a Christian, I condemn such attacks which is un-christian!
